The Missing Link: How Fruit Gets to Your Store

Global food supply chains run on internal shipping barcodes and logistics feeds that are rarely shared with everyday shoppers. While safety regulations require commercial shippers to log records, these files are kept inside corporate databases.

Consumers standing in the grocery aisle have only three clues:

  1. The Fruit & PLU Code: (e.g. 4016 Red Delicious, 4046 Hass Avocado, 94011 Organic Cavendish).
  2. Country/Region of Origin: Displayed on the sticker or shelf sign.

The USDA publishes daily shipping-point volumes, terminal market arrivals, and import crossings (e.g., volume of Hass avocados entering via Nogales, AZ vs. Pharr, TX). This establishes the deterministic baseline of seasonal harvest windows and port-of-entry volumes.

LAYER 2: MARITIME SHIPPING & CUSTOMS RECORDS

US Customs Waterborne Cargo Records

Ocean shipping records document commercial fruit shippers, carrier lines, ports of departure (e.g., Valparaíso, Chile; Callao, Peru; Guayaquil, Ecuador), and arrival ports (e.g., Philadelphia, Long Beach, Wilmington). This allows our engine to accurately map ocean shipping corridors and transit times.

LAYER 3: RETAIL TOPOLOGY & REGIONAL DISTRIBUTION HUBS

Grocery Hub-and-Spoke Regional Distribution Centers (RDCs)

Major supermarket chains (H-E-B, Kroger, Whole Foods, Trader Joe's, Walmart, Publix) operate fixed regional distribution centers. Produce follows deterministic hub-and-spoke routes from port or border crossing to the servicing RDC, where ripening conditioning occurs before local store delivery.

Logistics emissions are modeled per short ton-mile for refrigerated cargo:

  • Containerized Ocean Reefer: 24 g CO₂e / ton-mile (high thermal efficiency per unit mass across bulk ocean voyages).
  • Class 8 Refrigerated Diesel Truck: 175 g CO₂e / ton-mile (accounting for diesel transport refrigeration units).
  • Air Freight: 780 g CO₂e / ton-mile (used as a benchmark to demonstrate maritime shipping efficiency).
ECOLOGICAL AUDITING

World Resources Institute (WRI) Aqueduct 4.0 Integration

Each agricultural basin is scored on a 1.0 to 5.0 scale using WRI Aqueduct baseline water stress and groundwater depletion layers. This highlights regional realities such as the multi-decade mega-drought in Chile's Petorca avocado valley and the groundwater overdraft of California's Central Valley.
